Career & Technical Education
Connect academic study, technical skills, and practical experience.
A career-focused high-school pathway
The Career & Technical Education Diploma combines a strong academic foundation with progressively advanced technical study and documented, supervised career-connected experience. It requires at least 23 credits.
Build a coherent career concentration
Plan 3 credits in a defined career field, progressing from foundations to intermediate and advanced work. Add a related 1-credit practicum / work-based learning experience and a 1-credit career-related elective. These five career-focused credits sit alongside the academic requirements in the CTE Diploma Chart.
Use the concentration guide as a planning model
The suggested sequences are examples, not fixed course-title requirements. When using an outside technical school, apprenticeship, community college, licensed training program, or industry curriculum, use the provider’s actual course titles and document competencies, hours, and credentials earned.
Plan the work-based experience
The practicum should relate to the student’s concentration. Options include an apprenticeship, internship, clinical experience, supervised employment, industry mentorship, home- or school-based enterprise, or a substantial industry-mentored capstone.
Keep supporting documentation
Retain a concentration plan, course descriptions, training records, a work-based learning plan and hour log, supervisor or mentor information, a competency or task record, and a final evaluation or reflection. Include a portfolio or capstone and industry-credential documentation where applicable.
Academic requirements still matter
The CTE pathway includes 4 English, 4 mathematics, 3 science, 3 social studies, and 1 credit each in technology, financial literacy, fine arts, and combined Health / Physical Education. Use the full chart for course requirements and planning notes.
Students considering four-year college admission should review admission requirements early; additional language, mathematics, science, or other academics may be advisable.
This is an organizational diploma pathway. It should not be represented as an MSDE-approved CTE program unless the student is actually enrolled in such a program. External credential and licensure requirements must be met through the appropriate programs or providers.
