High School Course Planning
Course Options Guide
More choices. Clearer classifications. A high-school program that can actually fit the student.
Homeschooling gives families tremendous flexibility in designing a high school education. That flexibility can also make course planning difficult: What should a course be called? Which diploma requirement does it meet? Is it appropriate for a College Preparatory program? Could it be Honors? What about a course built around a student’s particular interest?
This guide is designed to help families and advisors answer those questions. The course titles included here are planning ideas and examples, not a prescribed course catalog. Families are not limited to these titles, and students are not expected to complete courses exactly as they appear here.
A course does not earn a particular classification simply because of its title. The actual content, depth, rigor, methods, assignments, and documentation determine how the course should be recorded.
How to Use This Guide
Start with the requirement. Then find—or build—a course that fits the student.
Each option is organized by Requirement Met, Course Title, Suggested Level, and Description. Begin with the student’s diploma plan and the requirement that still needs to be completed. Then use the course options as examples of the kinds of studies that may satisfy it.
Requirement Met identifies the area in which the course would normally be recorded. Some courses can reasonably fit more than one area. In those cases, consider the actual emphasis of the student’s course and avoid using the same credit to satisfy two separate diploma requirements.
Suggested Level indicates the diploma pathways or academic levels for which the course may commonly be appropriate. These are planning guides rather than automatic designations.
A course marked CP should contain the depth and academic preparation appropriate for a college-preparatory program. A course marked H is one that can reasonably be developed into Honors-level work when it meets the expectations in the Honors Coursework Guide. CTE identifies courses that may be particularly useful within a Career & Technical Education pathway.
Creative and individualized course titles are welcome. In fact, some of the strongest homeschool programs are built around a student’s particular interests. The title should, however, accurately describe the work completed and should never be used simply to make a course appear more advanced than its actual content.
College Prep Academic Electives
An Academic Elective does not have to come from a separate elective list.
For the College Preparatory Diploma, an Academic Elective is a high-school-level course that extends the student’s academic program through sustained study in a traditional academic discipline or another rigorous field.
This might include an additional English, mathematics, science, social studies, or world language course, but it can also include substantial academic work in fields such as computer science, psychology, philosophy, theology, logic, research, or another intellectually rigorous discipline.
In general, an Academic Elective should require meaningful reading, research, analysis, quantitative reasoning, formal writing, laboratory or investigative work, or similarly advanced intellectual engagement.
That means you should not look for a special list of courses labeled “Academic Electives.” As you browse the subject areas below, many courses can become an Academic Elective once the student’s required credits in that subject have already been satisfied.
Remember
The course title is the starting point—not the definition.
Two students can take courses with the same title and complete very different work. Likewise, two courses with different titles may cover substantially the same academic material. When choosing a classification, consider what the student actually studied: the scope of the content, resources used, assignments completed, time invested, level of analysis, and demonstrated learning.
The descriptions in this guide are therefore best understood as models for course development. They can help a family identify appropriate content for a traditional curriculum, an online course, dual enrollment, a co-op class, an independent study, or a parent-designed homeschool course.
Browse by Subject
What does your student need next?
Choose a subject area to explore traditional courses, alternative course titles, specialized studies, advanced options, and interest-driven courses. The goal is not to choose from a catalog—it is to help you recognize the many legitimate ways a student can satisfy a requirement while building an education that fits that student.
English Course Options
How to read the English classifications: English — Core courses naturally provide broad enough language-arts instruction to serve as one of the principal four English credits. English — Core with Composition courses can also fulfill a principal English requirement when they include substantial formal composition, research, grammar/language work, and literary analysis alongside the specialized theme. English — Specialized courses are legitimate English-language-arts studies, but for College Prep I would generally use them as electives or as one component of a broader four-year sequence.
Building a College Prep sequence: Across four credits, students should receive substantial instruction in composition, grammar, literature, research, vocabulary, critical reading, and analysis. A creative sequence is absolutely appropriate, but it should still demonstrate breadth rather than four narrowly specialized literature electives.

College Prep English:
Mathematics Course Options
College Prep sequence: Students should complete Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, and a fourth higher-level mathematics course such as Precalculus, Statistics, Calculus, College Algebra, or another appropriately advanced option. The course titles can vary, but the sequence should demonstrate increasing mathematical rigor.

College Prep Mathematics:
Science Course Options
Choose sciences by discipline, not simply by title. For university preparation, families should build a sequence with strong coverage of the major laboratory-science disciplines. Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth/Space Science, Anatomy & Physiology, Environmental Science, and other rigorous sciences can all have a place depending on the student’s goals.
Laboratory science: A course marked “+ Lab” can reasonably be structured as a laboratory science, but the label is earned by the student’s actual work. The course should include substantial hands-on laboratory, field, experimental, or investigative experiences—not merely demonstrations or videos.
College Prep planning: The College Preparatory pathway requires four science credits, with three laboratory sciences. The fourth science does not have to include a lab, which gives families room for advanced or specialized options tailored to the student’s interests and college plans.

Social Studies Course Options
Core social studies matters. A well-rounded high-school program should provide substantial study of World History, United States History, Government/Civics, and Economics. Course titles may integrate or reorganize these areas, but the student’s overall program should still demonstrate appropriate foundational coverage.
Specialized courses: Psychology, Sociology, Archaeology, Legal Studies, Military History, Geography, Church History, and other focused studies can be outstanding academic electives. They should supplement rather than unintentionally replace essential history, government, and economics content unless the course truly covers the corresponding requirement.
Interdisciplinary study: Homeschool students can combine history with literature, philosophy, religion, geography, art, or primary-source research. The transcript classification should reflect the dominant content and academic work of the course.

Computer Science, Engineering & Technology Course Options
Technology is broader than computer literacy. Courses may focus on programming, computer science, cybersecurity, engineering, robotics, digital systems, CAD, web development, data, or technological design. The key is that students are studying or creating with technology in a substantive way rather than merely using a computer to complete ordinary schoolwork.
Overlap is normal. Graphic Design, Animation, Architecture, Music Production, and similar courses may overlap with Fine Arts or CTE. Classify the credit according to the course’s primary emphasis and avoid counting the same credit twice toward separate diploma requirements.

Technology Education:
Fine Arts Course Options
Fine Arts includes more than traditional drawing or band. Visual art, music, theatre, dance, photography, film, graphic design, animation, architecture, fashion design, and other artistic disciplines can all provide legitimate Fine Arts credit when artistic study and creation are central to the course.
Practical art can count when design is central. Woodworking, textiles, jewelry, sewing, and similar work may be Fine Arts when the course emphasizes original design, aesthetics, composition, artistic decision-making, critique, and craftsmanship. A course focused primarily on production technique may fit better as a general or CTE elective.
Performance courses: Sustained private music study, choir, band, theatre productions, dance, or similar training can earn credit when there is enough structured instruction, practice, progression, repertoire, and documented work to constitute a high-school course.

Financial Literacy Course Options
Financial Literacy should prepare students for real adult decisions. A full-credit course should substantially address budgeting and cash flow, banking, credit and debt, taxes, insurance, saving and investing, consumer decisions, and long-term financial planning.
Focused courses may need supplementation. Investing, Taxes, Real Estate, Entrepreneurship, or Insurance can be excellent courses, but a narrowly focused class should not automatically be treated as the entire Financial Literacy requirement unless the remaining core topics are intentionally included.
Avoid double-counting: Economics & Personal Finance or Financial Mathematics may legitimately contain content from more than one subject area. The same one-credit course should still be assigned to one diploma requirement, with the other requirement satisfied elsewhere.

Health & Physical Education Course Options
Health & PE may be combined or separated. The one-credit requirement can be completed through a single integrated course or through separate Health and Physical Education components, such as ½ credit Health + ½ credit PE.
PE does not have to look like school-gym class. Swimming, martial arts, dance, weight training, horseback riding, running, hiking, team sports, and other substantial physical activities can form the basis of PE when instruction, regular participation, progression, and documentation are present.
Participation alone is not automatically a course. A structured athletic program may absolutely earn credit; occasional recreational activity generally does not. Existing serious athletic training does not need artificial assignments simply to make it look academic.

World Language Course Options
Sequence matters for College Prep. Students should generally complete at least two sequential credits in the same language. Spanish I followed by Spanish II is a stronger university-preparation sequence than two unrelated Level I languages.
Modern, signed, and classical languages: Modern spoken languages, American Sign Language, Latin, Ancient Greek, Biblical Hebrew, and other rigorous language studies can all be meaningful high-school language coursework when there is sustained instruction and measurable advancement.
Heritage speakers: Students who already know a language should begin at an appropriate level rather than repeating artificially easy coursework simply to generate credit. Applied courses such as Medical Spanish normally build on foundational language study rather than replacing it.

Elective Course Options
Electives are where the transcript becomes the student’s. Once required credits are covered, electives can reflect academic interests, career goals, practical skills, ministry, creative work, leadership, internships, entrepreneurship, agriculture, trades, communications, or other meaningful high-school study.
Academic Elective vs. General Elective: College Prep students must still complete the separate Academic Elective requirement described near the top of this guide. A rigorous course in philosophy, theology, psychology, computer science, additional math/science, Great Books, or another academic discipline may qualify. Furniture Restoration, Culinary Arts, Automotive Maintenance, Internship, and similar courses remain valuable electives but would generally be classified as General/CTE electives rather than Academic Electives.
CTE students: Electives can help build a coherent career pathway. Career-related electives, practicum/work-based learning, credentials, and concentration coursework should reinforce the student’s chosen technical or occupational direction.
